Dear Katy, Thank you for your message. Portugal expects you to bring in the minimum required amount from outside of Portugal into the country. But if your investment exceeds the minimum amount, you can apply for a mortgage. For further questions, please feel free to contact us at info@getgoldenvisa.com. Cheers 馃檪

Looking to move next year, and would like to immediately enroll in language classes. My goal is to get a resident permit and stay indefinitely. Please advise where to start in the process. Also, is it easy to arrive carrying a ‘light load’, and then get acclimated and send for the rest of my belongings once I’m situated? Thank you

Hello Lance, with your US passport, you are able to enter Portugal and stay up to 90 days for tourism or business without a visa. You may travel across the European Schengen countries with your passport within those 90 days. And yes, you may decide to apply for your D7 visa while in Portugal. You are not required to speak Portuguese in order to apply for your D7 visa. Hope this is helpful, best of luck!

Is it possible to travel to Portugal on a US passport and while there decide to apply for D7 visa?

Is a requirement to speak Portuguese if applying for D7 visa? (I understand it helps)

From date of arriving in Portugal is there restrictions for traveling to Schengen countries for short vacations?

Hello Isabel, yes, you can import your car from the US to Portugal. The Portuguese government allows you to bring your car and drive for personal use up to 180 days after you move. You will then need to register your car. The car must be inspected to ensure it\’s in compliance with Portuguese highway standards. It can be done in an authorized inspection center. The standards vary depending on the make, model, and age of the car. There are companies that will handle the whole process for you. Let us know if we can help you in any way with your D7 Visa, search for a home in Portugal, or anything else about the moving process. Best of luck!

If yes, could you provide information on that. Also do we have to commit to living there all year or is half-year possible?

Glad you found it helpful Kelli. If the US company gave you the go-ahead to work remotely from Portugal, then you may have some options in terms of getting a visa. Check out the D7 Visa in Portugal.

For D7, you would need to provide a letter from your employer stating that you are approved to work remotely from Portugal. It also has a minimum income / sufficient funds requirement, which you may satisfy.
If and once you qualify for your residence permit or visa, your daughter, who is 14, would also qualify as your dependent. She can then access the public education system in Portugal.

Hope this was helpful Kelli. Please feel free to email us at info@getgoldenvisa.com if there is anything else we can help you with.

Hello Mina, thank you for your comment. Well, first things first, both the US and Portugal would allow you to become dual citizens simultaneously. However, in your case, this is not relevant at the very beginning, since first, you will need to be a resident of Portugal for some time, before qualifying to apply for naturalization.

Seeing that you are a sole proprietor business consultant, you have a few available options available to you in regards to getting a residence permit or a visa in Portugal. The most probable three are:

D7 Visa
In order to apply for a D7 resident visa, you would need to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself in Portugal. That is why it is also referred to as a passive income visa.

D2 Visa
A D2 Visa is suitable for entrepreneurs that are planning on starting a business in Portugal. For this, you need to submit a business plan that satisfies the Portuguese government.

Self-Employment Visa
This is similar to D2 Visa. Portugal asks that you provide:
* An evidence of having set a company in Portugal, or
* A contract for services for the carrying out of a liberal profession and statement by the professional association with evidence of the registration

Portugal Golden Visa
This option is only interesting if you have the means. Portugal provides a residence permit for investors who make a qualifying investment in the country. This visa allows you to live and work in Portugal, travel across the Schengen countries and spread the joy to the rest of your family. After five years of holding a Golden Visa, you are eligible to apply for citizenship in Portugal.

We hope this was helpful Mina. Feel free to contact us at info@getgoldenvisa.com if we may be of further assitance.

I currently have a U.S Passport and live in America. Based on my research and the type of support your company provides at this point is looks like Portugal is a great fit for me. I\’m a sole proprietor Business Consultant. I work 100% virtual and can work from anywhere. I have a website. Can my business provide a path to citizenship or would I have to start an online business in Portugal?

Thanks so much, this was helpful. Could I work remotely in telehealth medicine for a U.S. company and live in Portugal also? Also, my daughter will be 14 when we move. Does she qualify to attend public school and what kind of visa would I need to apply for her?

Hello Kelli, Portugal has a robust healthcare sector, both private and public. The only issue is, you may need to get an appropriate accreditation in Portugal if your position as a nurse practitioner requires a specific training/certification in Portugal. Here\’s a detailed article on the health care system in Portugal: /portugal-healthcare-system
By the way, you may even be able to transfer your social security from the US to Portugal, depending on the specifics of your case. Here\’s a document where you can find more information on that:
